Shri Damodar Temple, South Goa

The Shri Damodar Mandir is a famous pilgrimage destination which is located at Zambaulim Village, south Goa district. This temple is situated just on the bank of the Kushawati River. This temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva. Actually, this original temple was located in Margaon city but Portuguese ruler destroyed this temple in 1565 due to this reason devotees move this temple to Zambaulim Village. Shri Damodar Temple, Goa is one of the most famous and architectural constructions in Goa. The same name River Damodar is found at Jharkhand and it is said that this is the only male river as all the other rivers are to be female versions in India. Now, if the Shri Damodar temple is to be believed then it stands on the banks of the River Kushawati and according to Hindus it is a river which has super healing power which helps to get rid of various ailments. The famous temple is dedicated to the Lord Damodar which is an incarnation of Lord Shiva. The deity is said to be originally based in a temple where the Holy Church Spirit is located now-a-days in Margao and it is said to escape from the Portuguese inquisition in 1565 along with the temple getting destroyed and the Church got built at the same site. The local rulers who were the Mahajans from Madgaon shifted the local deities including Shri Damodar and provided the land for the construction of temples as well as Vatan which is being paid even for today. The temple belongs to GSB community (Gowda Sarswath Brahmins) and it also has the idol of Lakshmi Narayana inside the sanctum.
