Shri Chandreshwar Temple, South Goa

Shree Chandreshwar temple is famous pilgrimage destination which is situated on Chandranath hill in south Goa. It is just 14 kilometers far from Margaon city. This temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva. People celebrate several festivals like Hanuman Jayanti, Mahashivratri and Dushera. This temple was built by Bhoja king in 8th century.

Sri Chandreshwar Temple, Goa is one of the famous and oldest temple of Lord Shiva with considering it as an incarnation of Lord Shiva. If one considers the important folklore then it is said that when the Moon rays falls on the Lingam the water seeps out of it and the Shivlinga is placed in such a way that the moonbeam falls on it during the fool moon which is about every fortnight in a month. The temple is ideally located at the Chandranath Hill in Quepem with the temple getting renovated at times and if the dynasty which is linked with this famous temple is the Bhoj Dynasty and the capital was called Chandrachur which is known to be Chandor after invasion by Portuguese. There is also another smaller temple dedicated to the main deity by the name of Bhootnath and who is also known as the Lord of Ghosts with another important name of Lord Shiva. The Monday which is said to be the worshipping day of Shiv as a deity makes way to a palanquin procession and it gets every Monday evening with offerings to Food and also the worshipers get the panoramic view of the valley that gives the Parvathi and Ganesh getting sculpted in stone at back of the temple.
