Ponda Fort (Shivaji Fort), North Goa

Ponda Fort or Farmagudi fort or Shivaji Fort is located in Ponda which is in Goa along the park which surrounds the fort and the statue of Shivaji the leader of the Marathas in the 17th Century is there. Now, if the Ponda story is to be known it was ruled by Adil Shah and was attacked by Shivaji Maharaj who attacked Ponda Fort and captured it from all the sides. Adil Shah Army faced a strong defeat in the battle in 1675 and the Shivaji Maharaj captured it. With not much to do in this Fort and only a Ganesh temple one could go to the nearby places and the butterfly conservatory of Goa near the Ponda Fort gives a better option to visit. The old Borim Bridge which is known for it’s scenic view is a great place to enjoy and is also believed that the bridge is haunted still people visit here. Recently, the middle part of the bridge got collapsed and the authorities have put a permanent fencing around the remaining sections of the bridge. The Sahakari Spice farm which is situated among the lush green surroundings of Curti, it is a great place to relax under the dense forest cover with the Ponda Fort is near to Shanta Durga Temple along with many other places of tourist interest to visit.

Ponda Fort is also called Shivaji Fort which is situated in ponda taluka, north Goa district. This fort was built by Adil Shah Muslim ruler but destroyed by Portuguese ruler in 1549 but it again rebuilt Shivaji in 1675. Now this fort has a statue of the Shivaji. It is a good picnic place where has a good park. This fort is open to general public to visit; it is also renovated by Government of Goa.
